(Corporación Universitaria del Caribe - CECAR, 2024) Maldonado Vergara, Carolina.; Martínez Bula, Ligia Rosa.
The present research aims to improve the reading comprehension of English texts by eighth-grade students from the Institución Educativa Ana Eva Escobar. The intervention was carried out through the use of scaffolding strategies, which are based on providing continuous support to students with the aim of achieving different objectives. The theory of scaffolding is derived from Vygotsky's approaches to the Zone of Proximal Development and is relatively new. The initial part of the study dealt with the theoretical foundation for scaffolding theory, theorists, related concepts, and laws connected to the present project. The research method used was quantitative, with the purpose of observing the statistical results of the students' progress, analyzing visible changes in student performance throughout the proposed classes. The study was conducted on 30 eighth-grade students. Due to the community's history of violence, unemployment, and family problems, the social and economic reality of the population studied is complex. There were observed behavior and motivational barriers on students, along with difficulties in understanding simple words, phrases, and texts. The findings of the investigation were positive because they showed that students had considerable improvements in understanding English texts, making use of the strategies worked out to answer questions or make guesses about what they read. From this, it can be concluded that it’s a significant advantage for teachers to provide support to their students in those tasks that are beyond their capabilities, they withdraw support while students gaining experience and freedom to carry out them independently. The findings also demonstrated how important is the use of strategies that focus on improving the weaknesses observed in reading comprehension in students because it benefits their confidence, interest, and performance in English classes El trabajo.
